New Bison Catalog

The University Libraries are pleased to announce a new interface to the
BISON Catalog to make it easier to use and understand.

The underlying functions of the BISON Catalog remain the
same, but the new design is intended to make searching, finding, and
saving results easier. New features include access to social bookmarks,
permalinks, and a spell checker. The new design is based on extensive
feedback from faculty and students, and we look forward to receiving
more feedback as we continue to improve and refine the BISON Catalog.

We hope you enjoy using the new system, and that you will take the time to offer feedback to libweb@buffalo.edu as we continue to improve and refine the system. Thank you.

Norman Mailer dies at 84

"Norman Mailer, the combative, controversial and often outspoken novelist who loomed over American letters longer and larger than any other writer of his generation, died early yesterday in Manhattan. He was 84.
The cause was acute renal failure, his family said.
Mr. Mailer burst on the scene in 1948 with ''The Naked and the Dead,'' a partly autobiographical novel about World War II, and for six decades he was rarely far from center stage. He published more than 30 books, including novels, biographies and works of nonfiction, and twice won the Pulitzer Prize: for ''The Armies of the Night'' (1968), which also won the National Book Award, and ''The Executioner's Song'' (1979)." 2007 Nobel Prize in Literature

"Doris Lessing, the Persian-born, Rhodesian-raised and London-residing novelist won the 2007 Nobel Prize in Literature.
Announcing the award in Stockholm, the Swedish Academy described her as 'that epicist of the female experience, who with skepticism, fire and visionary power has subjected a divided civilization to scrutiny.' Ms. Lessing, who turns 88 this month, never finished high school and largely educated herself through voracious reading. She has written dozens of books of fiction, as well as plays, nonfiction and two volumes of autobiography. She is the 11th woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature." Milton Trial Database

The John Milton Bibliography (MRTS Online) until December 31, 2007.

John T. Shawcross's "Milton: A Bibliography for the Years 1624-1700
(Revised) and for the years 1701-1799" is an extensive revision and
continuation of the 1984 print edition of "Milton: A Bibliography for the
Years 1624-1700". It is the only Milton bibliography that covers the
eighteenth century. The bibliography brings together manuscripts and
editions of Milton's works, studies and critical statements concerning
Milton's life and works, allusions and quotations, and significant
imitations, during the years 1624-1799.

Now at the Libraries Annex is Buff State's holdings of the Irish University Press series of British parliamentary papers. The 1015 volumes are represented by 86 catalog records, providing access to the individual sets which make-up the entire series.

BISON offers you many improved features, including the ability to easily view the materials you have charged out and their due dates, and then to renew materials online. New Online Resource Available to UB Faculty, Students & Staff

Iter: Gateway to the Middle Ages and Renaissance Iter's bibliography includes literature pertaining to the Middle Ages and Renaissance (400-1700). It also includes the first online edition of Paul Oskar Kristeller's Iter Italicum, the most comprehensive finding list available of previously uncatalogued or incompletely catalogued Renaissance humanistic manuscripts found in libraries and collections all over the world.

2005 Nobel Prize for Literature

Harold Pinter has been awarded the 2005 Nobel Prize for Literature, the highest honour available to any writer in the world. In announcing the award, Horace Engdahl, Chairman of the Swedish Academy, said that Pinter was an artist "who in his plays uncovers the precipice under everyday prattle and forces entry into oppression's closed rooms." Pinter will travel to Stockholm in December to accept the award (http://www.haroldpinter.org/home/index.shtml).

First-edition copy of 'Great Gatsby' found

A first-edition copy of F. Scott Fitzgerald's Jazz Age novel "The Great Gatsby" sat in a box of unsorted volumes at Baldwin's Book Barn for almost two months before it was noticed, and now the bookseller hopes it will bring more than $50,000. See WashingtonPost.com for more details.

Albanian Writer Wins Booker Prize

The Albanian author Ismail Kadare won the 1st Man Booker International Prize for his body of work. Kadare was named earlier this month as the recipient of the $108,000 prize, beating a field that included Colombia's Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Margaret Atwood of Canada, American writer Saul Bellow, Czech Milan Kundera and Britain's Ian McEwan and Muriel Spark.
